What Is MetaMask? An Honest Review

MetaMask is the default wallet of the Ethereum world: a browser extension and mobile app that holds your keys, connects to dapps, and signs transactions across effectively every EVM network. Tens of millions of people use it. That ubiquity is its greatest strength and the source of its biggest risk, because the most-used wallet is also the most-imitated, most-phished target in crypto.

What It Is

A self-custody hot wallet. It generates a seed phrase on your device, and from then on your keys live in the extension, encrypted by your password. MetaMask the company never holds funds. Connecting to a DEX, marketplace, or any dapp means MetaMask is the thing that pops up asking you to approve and sign.

Strengths

Universal compatibility. If a dapp exists on an EVM chain, it supports MetaMask. That is the whole moat, and it is a real one.
Battle-tested core. A decade of being attacked daily is its security audit. Key management has held up; nearly all "MetaMask hacks" are users signing hostile things elsewhere.
Hardware pairing. It works as a front end for Ledger and Trezor devices, which is the correct way to use it with real money: MetaMask as the steering wheel, keys on the hardware wallet.

Weaknesses and Honest Warnings

Built-in swap markup. The convenient swap button carries a service fee under one percent baked into the quote. Fine for small amounts; on size, it is the most expensive convenience in the interface.
Signing screens still assume expertise. Readability has improved, but hostile approvals can look routine. This is what feeds drainers; a simulation-first wallet like Rabby shows what a transaction will do more plainly.
Target number one. Fake MetaMask extensions, fake support accounts, and fake "verify your wallet" pages are an industry. Real MetaMask support never asks for a seed phrase. Nobody legitimate does.

Who It Is Good For

Anyone active on EVM chains, as the compatibility layer. The sane setup for meaningful money: MetaMask paired with a hardware device, a separate throwaway wallet for experiments, and approvals cleaned via Revoke.cash.
