What Is Etherscan? An Honest Review and How to Read It

Etherscan is Ethereum's block explorer: the site where you look up any transaction, address, token, or contract and see what the chain actually recorded. It is the closest thing crypto has to a public records office, free, no account needed, and learning to read it is the single most underrated skill a self-custody user can build. No sponsorship, no affiliate links.

What It Is

A search engine over the blockchain. Paste a transaction hash and see its status, fees, and exactly what moved. Paste an address and see its balance and full history. Paste a contract address and see its code, its token holders, and whether the source is verified. Sister explorers cover other chains, Solscan for Solana, Basescan for Base, with the same grammar.

The Five Lookups Worth Learning

Did my transaction go through? Paste the hash: success, pending, or failed, plus the gas it burned. Ends the refreshing-the-wallet anxiety loop permanently.
What is this token really? The token page shows holders, supply, and the verified contract. A famous ticker whose contract differs from the project's published address is your scam alarm; see wash trading and clone tokens.
Who am I about to pay? Address pages reveal history: a "support agent's" fresh address that has received fifty small deposits today tells its own story.
What can spend my tokens? The token-approvals tool lists live allowances, complementing Revoke.cash.
Is the contract verified? Verified source with a healthy holder spread is not safety, but unverified code plus urgency is a complete answer.

Strengths

Ground truth. Wallets and dapps interpret; the explorer shows the record itself. Disputes end here.
Free at the point of need, with the paid tiers aimed at developers, not readers.
Labels and warnings on known scam addresses and fake tokens, imperfect but genuinely useful.

Weaknesses and Honest Warnings

Reading it takes practice, and raw data can mislead beginners: airdropped scam tokens appear in every wallet's history, including yours, and their presence means nothing. Interacting with them is the trap; see airdrop.
Lookalike explorer sites exist. Bookmark the real one; a fake explorer showing fake balances is a phishing stage prop.
Centralized lens on decentralized data: the chain is the source; Etherscan is one widely trusted window onto it.

Who It Is Good For

Everyone who transacts on-chain, full stop. Ten minutes of practice per lookup pays for itself the first time something feels wrong. The habits it supports live across my Security page and the memecoin research routine.
