What Is DefiLlama? An Honest Review
DefiLlama is the reference dashboard for DeFi data: TVL across thousands of protocols and chains, yields, stablecoin supplies, fees, unlocks, hacks, all free, ad-free, and methodologically documented. In a sector where most dashboards sell placement, its refusal to is the product. This is the data site I trust most in crypto, which is exactly why its numbers still deserve careful reading. No sponsorship, no affiliate links.
What It Is
An open aggregator tracking what is deposited where: per-protocol and per-chain TVL with history, a yields explorer ranking pools with their sources labeled, stablecoin circulation dashboards, fee and revenue leaderboards, token unlock calendars, and a hacks database that doubles as the sector's memorial wall. Listings are community-maintained adapters, methodology is public, and double-counting toggles (excluding staking and pool2 circularity) are exposed rather than hidden.
How People Actually Use It
- Sizing a protocol before depositing: TVL history shows whether capital arrived organically or via incentives, and whether it stayed, the mercenary-capital question from the TVL entry.
- Comparing advertised yields with sources labeled: the explorer separates fee-paid yield from emission-paid, operationalizing the who-is-paying rule.
- Watching unlock calendars before buying anything with a vesting schedule, per FDV.
- Checking stablecoin supply trends, the closest thing DeFi has to a money-flow gauge.
Strengths
- Incentive hygiene: no ads, no paid listings, no boosts. Donation and API funded. The conflict-of-interest section other data sites need is, unusually, empty.
- Methodology in the open: adapters are public code, and the double-count toggles let you see how much of a chain's headline number is circular.
- Breadth with history: the closest thing to a complete, comparable record of where DeFi capital lives and lived.
Weaknesses and Honest Warnings
- TVL's native illusions survive honest measurement: token-price swings move TVL without a single deposit, and manufactured activity can still dress smaller protocols. The site measures honestly; the metric stays gameable.
- Listing is not vetting: adapters get merged for measurability, not safety. A protocol charting beautifully on DefiLlama can still be an unaudited exploit lottery; the oracle and contract questions remain yours.
- Yield explorer literalism: quoted APYs float and collapse, per the standing warning. Sort by TVL and age before percentage.
