What Is an NFT Marketplace?
An NFT marketplace is a venue where people list, browse, buy, and sell NFTs. Think of a stock exchange crossed with eBay, except the marketplace never takes custody: your NFTs stay in your own wallet until the moment a sale settles on-chain.
How It Actually Works
- Sellers sign listings at a chosen price. Buyers either accept a listing or place bids, sometimes on a single item, sometimes across a whole collection.
- When the two sides meet, a smart contract swaps the NFT for payment in one atomic transaction. Nobody can take the money and keep the item.
- Costs stack in three layers: the network's gas fee, the marketplace fee, and often a creator royalty set by the collection.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Phishing clones are the real danger. Fake marketplace sites ask you to sign transactions that drain wallets. Bookmark real URLs and never follow marketplace links from DMs.
- Fake collections on real marketplaces. Verify the collection badge and contract address before paying.
- Blind signing. Read what a transaction actually approves. My security page covers the habit.
When It Matters
The two venues worth knowing are OpenSea, the multi-chain giant, and Tensor, the Solana trading floor. I reviewed both honestly: OpenSea review, Tensor review.
