OpenSea is the best known NFT marketplace. If NFTs have an eBay, this is it: a venue where people list, browse, buy, and sell digital collectibles. I get asked about it more than any other NFT platform, so here is the plain version. I have no sponsorship or affiliate relationship with OpenSea. This is just what it is and what it is not.
OpenSea is a peer-to-peer marketplace for NFTs. It started on Ethereum and now supports many chains, including Base, Polygon, and Solana. You connect your own wallet, and the marketplace matches buyers and sellers through smart contracts. OpenSea never holds your NFTs or your crypto. Your wallet does. In recent years it has also added regular token trading alongside NFTs, so the front page now shows trending tokens next to collections.
OpenSea launched in 2017, back when NFTs mostly meant CryptoKitties. During the 2021 mania it became one of the busiest sites in crypto, clearing billions of dollars in monthly volume at the peak in early 2022. Then the NFT market fell roughly 90 percent, competitors like Blur pulled away pro traders with zero fees and token rewards, and OpenSea spent the bear market rebuilding. The current version is a leaner, multi-chain platform that also handles token swaps. It survived a full boom and bust cycle, which very few NFT businesses can say.
Someone buying their first NFT, browsing broadly across chains, or selling a collectible without pro-trader tooling. If you are trading Solana NFTs specifically and want speed and depth, look at Tensor as well; I compare them in my Tensor review. If you are hoping NFTs make you rich, no marketplace fixes that. Most collections lose value. Buy things you actually want to own.
Bookmark the real address and type it, never click marketplace links from social media or DMs. Never enter a seed phrase anywhere. Review what a transaction asks you to approve before signing. My Wallet Security and Self-Custody page covers the habits that keep marketplace users out of trouble.
The real site: OpenSea.
