What Is a Layer 2?
A Layer 2 is a network built on top of a base blockchain, almost always Ethereum, that processes transactions cheaply off the main chain and posts compressed proofs of them back to it. Same security neighborhood, a fraction of the gas. Arbitrum, Optimism, and Base are the household names.
How It Actually Works
- You bridge assets from Ethereum (L1) to the L2, transact there for cents, and the L2 batches thousands of transactions into single settlements on mainnet.
- Rollups, the dominant design, publish enough data to L1 that the L2's state can be verified and reconstructed. Optimistic rollups assume validity and allow fraud challenges; ZK rollups prove validity mathematically up front.
- The practical outcome for a normal person: Ethereum's ecosystem at usable prices. Most consumer DeFi and NFT activity has migrated to L2s for exactly this reason.
The Tradeoffs, Honestly
- Bridges are chokepoints. Moving funds between layers has historically been where the big exploits happened. Native withdrawal delays on optimistic rollups (about a week, unless you pay a fast-bridge) surprise people.
- Training wheels. Most L2s today retain centralized sequencers and upgrade keys, meaning meaningful trust in the operating team while decentralization roadmaps play out. L2Beat grades exactly this and belongs in your bookmarks.
- Fragmentation. Funds on one L2 are not on another; each hop costs a bridge trip, and wrong-network mistakes are the classic beginner loss.
Risks and Common Mistakes
- Sending assets to an address on the wrong network. Verify the network before every transfer, not after.
- Treating all L2s as equal. Security models differ enough to check before parking size.
- Assuming cheap fees mean safe activity. The scams from the memecoin world operate on L2s at full strength.
When It Matters
Any Ethereum activity under a few thousand dollars per transaction effectively lives on L2s now. Context on my DeFi page; comparative fees at L2Fees.info.
